Jakarta – Ministry of Agriculture (Deptan) will perform surveillance to approximately 7 millions pigs all over Indonesia.
Agriculture Minister RI, Anton Apriyantono, Jakarta, Wednesday (29/4) stated there is no report of pig flu in Indonesian pigs. But the Ministry of Agriculture will be keep aware.
“We will do surveillance to 7 millions population of pigs. We’ll announce the result within 2 weeks”, added Anton.
He also mentioned the surveillance will be done in several pig farm centralized areas as Bali, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), West Kalimantan, Papua, South Sulawesi, North Sumatera and Batam.
According to General Directorate of Animal Livestock, pig population in Indonesia is about 7.5 millions. This number is distributed in NTT (1.6 millions), Bali (900 thousands), West Kalimantan (876 thousands), North Sumatera (760 thousands), South Sulawesi (530 thousands), Papua (507 thousands) and remaining 2.2 millions distributed in other areas.
Despite of conducting examination to pigs, Deptan will instruct municipal/city and province regional governments to monitor pig farm practices. Regional governments should do considerate monitoring to living pig, fresh pork and any of its products.
Slaughter house should only doing slaughtering to healthy pigs, which also legalized with animal health certification (SKKH).

The Minister also announced, government has issued pig, pork and its derivatives import restriction. “Only meat which has been treated with certain standardization, can be imported”, said Anton.
According to General Directorate of Livestock, currently, Indonesia is importing pig products about 100 to 3000 ton per year. In 2008, import was recorded reaching 2,600 ton; as pig product assortments including high quality meat.
