Palembang, South Sumatera – A 24-year-old female with initial SR (24) is being treated at isolation unit Melati Hall SARS Center RSMH hospital, Palembang.
Patient is suspected to have bird flu infection since chest x-ray revealed acute lesion in her lung.
At first, SR was referred to AK Gani hospital and diagnosed to have dengue fever. After several days’ treatment, patient developed prolonged breathing difficulty so that she was transferred to Siti Khadijah hospital.
Patient received chest x-ray twice at the two previous hospitals she was being treated at. First chest x-ray was taken on August 3, showed no abnormality in lung. Second chest x-ray was on August 7, when white shade was spotted, which suggested as rapid changes of lung region. Based on this finding, doctor at Siti Khadijah hospital referred patient to RSMH hospital Palembang.
Currently, patient is under treatment in Room no 1, Gedung SARS – a closed unit equipped with breathing assistant device. Paramedics in charge required to wear mask and sterile clothes. Patient’s last condition showed body temperature at 37.8℃ with breathing problems and cough. Medical team of RSMH hospital has collected saliva and blood samples of patient to be sent to Health Laboratory, Ministry of Health in Jakarta and Palembang. “It takes 5 days to get the result from Jakarta lab. But, from Palembang lab probably it only takes 2-3 days,” said Zen Ahmad. To the press, Zen Ahmad pointed out that SR was not swine flu suspect, but bird flu suspect. “This is only presumption, let’s wait for the test result,” he said.
RSMH experienced in treating bird flu patient previously – Marwiyah (21), a student of UMBARI, Jambi Province – who died of bird flu infection in 2007.
There was no information about patient’s contact history with birds or any other animals. Patient’s uncle confirmed that his niece didn’t have any – either contact with birds nor travel abroad.
“Patient never travelled overseas before. She just finished school and about to find a job,” added Zen Ahmad.
