Badung, Bali ::: People develop flu following to the bird flu outbreak

Badung, Bali – Locals developed flu symptoms, following to bird flu outbreak in chickens in Banjar Pegending and Banjar Pengilingan, Desa Dalung, Kecamatan Kuta Utara, Kabupaten Badung.

Up to present moment, Health Service hasn’t conducted any examination to the people in those areas. “We don’t know if the illness caused by bird flu virus or only because of seasonal transition, but Health Service should investigate this,” said of Communication Forum (FK3D) of Badung, I Ketut Haryono.

According to FK3D record, dozens of people developed flu symptoms post H5N1 outbreak in chickens in those area. Sick people have been asked to get medical help to Sanglah hospital.

Meanwhile, chickens depopulation is still continuing.

Yogyakarta ::: Bird flu suspect recovering

Yogyakarta – A bird flu suspect female, AMM (29) finally has passed her critical condition after 9 days fell in coma in Dr Sardjito hospital. She had been assisted with ventilator and central vena pressure, and predicted to have 40% survivability, previously.

Recovering of the patient is surprising for the medical team of Dr Sardjito hospital. Previously, Dr Sardjito hospital was strongly suspected bird flu infection to the patient based on the symptoms and history of contact with sick birds. However, further test result from Ministry of Health laboratory to the patient showed negative bird flu H5N1.

“Examination done by Dr Sardjito hospital still doubted, so that we were waiting for confirmation from Ministry of Health laboratory. And it resulted negative,” said Head of Legal and Public Relation, Dr Sardjito hospital, Trisno Heru Nugroho.

Other infectious disease which is accompanying, added Heru, caused patient fell in critical condition. For this reason, patient will keep being isolated.

Dr Sardjito hospital medical team didn’t mention the kind of infectious disease carried by the patient.

Banjar Peganding, Bali ::: Birds depopulation following to H5N1 outbreak

Banjar Pegending, Bali – Depopulation to chickens is done in Banjar Pegending, Desa Dalung, following to bird flu outbreak in chickens. Livestock Service of Banjar Peganding spokesman, Ketut Susila, mentioned that 17 chickens belonging to people were found suddenly dead from Friday (7/8) to Wednesday (12/8). This incident also occurred in the next neighborhood, Banjar Pengilihan. Rapid test t the chickens indicated bird flu infection; however laboratory test for confirmation is still ongoing.

Until Wednesday (12/8), about 200 birds have been culled, including chickens and ducks. Depopulation and disinfection to surrounding area were done under supervision of Livestock, Fishery and Marine Service (Diskanaklut) of Badung.

For preventive measure, Disnakanlut Badung has proposed birds depopulation compensation about IDR 42 millions to provincial government.

Yogyakarta ::: Bird flu situation in chickens

Yogyakarta – A total 3,511 birds including chickens, ducks and pigeons in Yogyakarta die of bird flu H5N1 infection from January to July 2009.

“Mostly, those dead birds were not caged and free ranged,” said the spokesman of Agriculture Service of Yogyakarta, Eddy Sulistiyono.

Regarding to this, Yogyakarta provincial government will enhance livestock traffic in border area by adding more and intensifying monitoring units. Currently, Yogyakarta has two animal traffic control units, in Kecamatan Tempel, Sleman and Kecamtan Temon, Kulonprogo. New units will be added in Kalibawang and Dendeles.

This effort is done due to the finding of mass death to the birds in Kabupaten Sleman and Bantul previously.

Indonesia ::: Novel H1N1 suspect dies. Bird flu suspect still in coma.

Bandung, West Java – A novel H1N1 suspected patient, with initial S, died in Dr Hasan Sadikin (RSHS) hospital, Bandung, on Monday (10/8). S was admitted to RSHS hospital on Saturday evening after had been treated at two other hospitals in Bandung. Victim was critical condition with lung disturbance when entered RSHS. Lab confirmation by Ministry of Health Laboratory is undergoing.

Meanwhile, a bird flu suspect woman, AMM (29), who is currently being treated at Dr Sardjito hospital, Yogyakarta is still in critical condition, told Trisno Heru Nugroho, the Public Relation of Dr Sardjito hospital.  Patient’s condition is worsening since had been admitted to Dr Sardjito hospital, and assisted with ventilator.

Patient – who’s not accompanied with any relatives – is assumed as a resident of Kediri, East Java.

Palembang, South Sumatera ::: SR tested negative bird flu

Palembang, South Sumatera – Laboratory examination of Center Laboratory of Health (BBLK) Palembang to blood and saliva samples of SR – an H5N1 suspect patient from Sukarami – resulted negative.

However, hospital hasn’t released the patient from isolation unit until confirmation test from Ministry of Health Laboratory in Jakarta has been issued.

Head of RSMH hospital medical team, dr Zen Ahmad, on Monday, mentioned that RSMH had sent blood and saliva samples of patients to two laboratories, in Palembang and Jakarta.

“We are still waiting for Jakarta laboratory test result. Usually, the result will be the same,” said Zen Ahmad. Meanwhile, the patient is still being treated as bird flu suspect patient, he added.

Patient is diagnosed to have severe common flu infection. Previously, she was suspected to have bird flu infection since chest x-ray showed acute lung abnormality. Currently, her temperature fell to normal and her breathing has recovered. There is no information of patient’s contact history with birds.

Yogyakarta ::: A bird flu suspect patient in coma.

Yogyakarta – A 29-year-old female, with initial AMM, is being treated at Dr Sradjito hospital, Yogyakarta. She is reported to have developed breathing failure. Patient has been in critical condition since the first time she was admitted to the hospital on August 6. Patient has no relative in accompany.

Head of Public Relation Dr Sardjito hospital, Trisno Heru Nugroho mentioned that patient was currently being treated in Bangsal Kartika, a bird flu and swine flu treatment unit. She is assisted with ventilator for breathing.

Sardjito hospital received the patient from PKU Muhammadiyah hospital, at the state of coma with breathing failure, said Trisno. Information from previous hospital staff was saying that patient had contact with birds during a wedding rehearsal in Gunung Kidul.

So far, no family or relative is accompanying the patient so that the hospital is having difficulty to identify patient’s background and medical record. Patient is recorded as a resident of two addresses: Klitren lll/364 GK, Yogyakarta; and Jl Raya 108 Lirboyo, Mojoroto, Kediri, East Java.

 In the same place, another bird flu suspect patient, RR (12) and two swine flu patients are also under treatment. They are in a good condition.

Dr Sardjito hospital has treated three fatal bird flu patients since 2007, named QL, DS and D.

Palembang, South Sumatera ::: RSMH hospital Palembang isolates a bird flu suspect

Palembang, South Sumatera – A 24-year-old female with initial SR (24) is being treated at isolation unit Melati Hall SARS Center RSMH hospital, Palembang.

Patient is suspected to have bird flu infection since chest x-ray revealed acute lesion in her lung.

At first, SR was referred to AK Gani hospital and diagnosed to have dengue fever. After several days’ treatment, patient developed prolonged breathing difficulty so that she was transferred to Siti Khadijah hospital.

 Patient received chest x-ray twice at the two previous hospitals she was being treated at. First chest x-ray was taken on August 3, showed no abnormality in lung. Second chest x-ray was on August 7, when white shade was spotted, which suggested as rapid changes of lung region. Based on this finding, doctor at Siti Khadijah hospital referred patient to RSMH hospital Palembang.

Currently, patient is under treatment in Room no 1, Gedung SARS – a closed unit equipped with breathing assistant device. Paramedics in charge required to wear mask and sterile clothes. Patient’s last condition showed body temperature at 37.8℃ with breathing problems and cough. Medical team of RSMH hospital has collected saliva and blood samples of patient to be sent to Health Laboratory, Ministry of Health in Jakarta and Palembang. “It takes 5 days to get the result from Jakarta lab. But, from Palembang lab probably it only takes 2-3 days,” said Zen Ahmad. To the press, Zen Ahmad pointed out that SR was not swine flu suspect, but bird flu suspect. “This is only presumption, let’s wait for the test result,” he said.

RSMH experienced in treating bird flu patient previously – Marwiyah (21), a student of UMBARI, Jambi Province – who died of bird flu infection in 2007.

There was no information about patient’s contact history with birds or any other animals. Patient’s uncle confirmed that his niece didn’t have any – either contact with birds nor travel abroad.

“Patient never travelled overseas before. She just finished school and about to find a job,” added Zen Ahmad.

Bangli, Bali ::: A 15-year-old tested negative H5N1 by rapid test

Bangli, Bali – A 15-year-old bird flu suspect, Ni Komang Nilawati, resident of Pulesari Kecamatan Tembuku, Bangli  tested H5N1 negative by Sanglah hospital. Test result is announced by Livestock and Fishery Service of Bangli last Friday (7/8).

Previously, Nilawati was rushed to Sanglah hospital as she developed fever after having contact to suddenly dead chickens. Head of Livestock and Fishery Service of Bangli, Ir Ida Idewa Agung Raka said that victim was tested negative H5N1. Test was done by using rapid test at the next day she was treated in Sanglah hospital.

However, chickens belonging to the patient were confirmed to have died of H5N1 infection.

According to the field officers, a total 1,836 chickens and ducks are infected by H5N1 virus in Bangli. Of all, a total 1,356 are dead. “People are reported to showing symptoms subsequent to the outbreak, but they are all tested negative,” said Agung Raka.

Bali ::: A 15-year-old bird flu suspect treated in Sanglah hospital

Bali – A 15-year-old female, Ni Komang Nilawati, resident of Pulesari Kecamatan Tembuku, Bangli, rushed to Sanglah hospital, on Wednesday evening (5/8) after several chickens belonging to her family found suddenly died.

According to the information, victim had contact with her dead chickens when burying them. She developed fever and flu symptoms after that. Worrying about Nilawati’s condition, Nursaba – patient’s parent – admitted Nilawati to Sanglah hospital.

Thursday (6/8), Health service and Livestock Service officers of Bangli have investigated victim’s location and found positive H5N1 to the dead chickens by using rapid test. Subsequent to this finding, Livestock Service culled all remaining chickens belong to victim’s family.
