Suspect Bird Flu Case now declared negative

A suspect bird flu [avian A/H5N1 influenza] patient who was treated
for 8 days in the regional Public Hospital Gunung Jati, Cirebon City,
has now been declared bird flu negative. The patient was allowed to
return home after receiving results from the laboratory of the
Penelitian Dan Pengembangan Kesehatan Hall of the Department of the Health.

Chairman of the the RS Gunung Jati Bird Flu [Laboratory] Dr Ali
Hanafiah stated on Friday (30 Jan 2009) that results of samples of
blood, nasal and throat fluids from a suspected bird flu patient had
tested negative. Subsequently the patient was allowed to return home.

During the patient’s stay in hospital her clinical condition
improved. Her initially low leucocyte counts and her low body
temperature returned to normal.

The patient was initially considered to be a suspected bird flu
patient because of contact with poultry which had suddenly died. The
patient was 8 months pregnant and on admission was suffering from
respiratory tract inflammation and bronchial pneumonia. There was no
indication of bird flu infection. All test results from the
laboratory of Balitbangkes Department of Health were negative for
avian influenza virus infection.

East Java::: Probolinggo declared as bird flu alert status area

Probolinggo, — Probolinggo subdistrict is claimed as bird flu (avian influenza) alert status. This status is issued as about 301 chicken found dead due to avian influenza virus these last 2 weeks.

Head of Livestock Service region Probolinggo, Djaeni, stated that in these 2 weeks they have found two considerable cases. First is Kecamatan Tongas, RT 7/RW 2 Dusun Krajan Desa Bayeman. From 15-20 January 2009, about 154 chickens died and tested H5N1 by laboratory test. Livestock service meets difficulty to identify the cause of death since people usually discard the dead birds to the river. Second oKecamatan Gending. Second outbreak occurred at Kecamatan Gending RT 2/RW 6 Dusun Tiga Desa Klaseman. From 16 to 24 January about 147 chickens were dead.

Maros, South Sulawesi::: Chickens around bird flu suspect area culled (updated)

MAROS, South Sulawesi – Fishery, Marine and Livestock Service Maros culled approximately 79 birds at Pao-Pao, Bajingmangai, Mandai, Maros Subdistrict.

This action was taken after a villager of Pao Pao suspected to contract bird flu virus. Bird flu rapid team and Participatory Disease Surveillance and Response (PDSR), Isdarjid Madjid stated that action was taken since 4 birds belong to Anwar died on 26 January. After that another 2 birds in the neighborhood also died. Depopulation followed by flock disinfection action were taken after they confirmed bird flu H5N1 by using rapid test.

Meanwhile, the child bird flu suspected victim, Ansar (5), is now treated at intensive unit of RSUD Wahidin Sudiro Husodo,Kota Makassar. According to Anwar, Ansar’s father, patient had contact with suddenly dead birds. Head of Health service of Maros, Firman Jaya, announced Ansar as bird flu suspect patient since he develop bird flu like symptoms such as high fever and sore throat.

Bird flu suspect from Surabaya tested positive H5N1

An information for reliable source, Dr Chairul Anwar Nidom, Head of Avian Influenza Laboratory, a collaborative research of Institute of Tropical Disease Airlangga University, Indonesia, and International Center of Medical Research and Tretament, Kobe University Japan. This information is related to recent post at Afludiary.

St (18), female,  was working as a house maid at Darmo Permai (Western Surabaya) has died due to bird flu infection. On 16 January, victim developed respiratory disorder and admitted to private maternity service. On 22 January, victim admitted to Muji Rahayu hospital because of worsening condition. After diagnosed to having lung failure, she was directed to Dr. Sutomo hospital Surabaya on 23 January. Samples were sent to Jakarta laboratory on 24 January, and she passed away at 20.30 the same day.

Laboratory examination result has been issued on 28 January 2009 evening and samples were tested postitive H5N1 infection by PCR.

Victim has visiting history to her hometown, Lumajang, last October (2008).

Bird flu virus infects chickens in Lamongan.

 

Lamongan, Monday 26 January 2009.

Approximately 4000 chickens were culled since might be infected by avian influenza or bird flu virus. Bird flu indication observed on 9 subdistrict, Maduran, Sekaran, Solokuro, Karanganeng, Sukodadi, Turi, Sugio, Kalitengah and Pucuk. Mostly infected chickens are native chickens.

Animal Health Division of Health Service Lamongan, Puji Hermawan, Monday (26/1) suggested that Bengawan Solo River responsible for the spreading of the virus. Dead chickens might aside from the stream and infect chickens around Lamongan. This is also supported by the findings that  bird flu cases appear frequently around Bengawan Solo stream.

Government officials do preventive effort such as disinfecting the infected area, and culling of infected birds selectively only within the same flock. According to Kompas 2007, Lamongan was announced as bird flu alert status area, and at that moment numbers of bird flu cases emerged among chickens accompanied by several suspected human case.

Bird flu virus is attacking Wonogiri again. This time several infected chicken found at Desa Keblokan, Desa Sendangijo, Swelogiri subdistrict.

Chief of Selogiri subdistrict, Bambang Haryanto said, “Even though rapid test to confirm the influenza virus was done by random sampling, but all dead chickens showed similar bird flu infection finding. Within last two days (since the news published), at least 93 dead chicken found at Desa Singodutan, 55  on Dusun matah, 5 on Ngaliyan, and 33 on Sanggrahan.

Within Wonogiri at least 11 subdistricts are bird flu outbreak area, i.e. Wonogiri, Selogiri, Manyaran, Eromoko, Sidoharjo, Ngadirojo, Pracimantoro, Wuryantoro, Tirtomoyo, Giritontro, and Jatipurno.

Cirebon, West Java::: Bird flu suspected patient

CIREBON – Ela, 35, bird flu suspected patient from Desa DUka Imut RT 01/01, Garawangi, Kuningan admitted to regional hospital RSUD Cirebon after treated at Kuningan hospital before.

Ela is transferred to RSUD Gunung Jati  on Thursday evening after two days hospitalization  since Tuesday (20/1) at 45 Kuningan hospital.  Two of victim’s children, Mia, 11 and Dea, 4 which also developing same symptoms are still treated at 45 hospital due to respiratory problem.

According to Rina,the medical doctor of Garawangi Kuningan public health center, Ela has contact history with bird flu positive birds on Monday (19/1). At that time, seven chickens around Ela’s neighborhood died. Ela and two of her children developed high fever at the next day.

Garawangi public health center found bird flu signs on those three victims, such as high fever, breathing difficulty and others. Kuningan livestock service has confirmed that those dead chickens and other 30 chickens contracted bird flu virus.

RSUD Guning Jati hospital has collected Ela’s blood sample to be examined by Research and Development Department of Health Ministry Jakarta. Up to now, Ela is still under treatment at isolation unit of Gunung Jati hospital.

Banyumas, Central Java Bird flu Suspect Human Case

Banyumas – Rupinah (45), resident of Wiramastra village, Bawang, Subdistrict, Central Java admitted to isolation unit of regional hospital RSUD Banyumas as bird flu suspect patient. She was developing bird flu signs such as breathing difficulty coughing, high fever and stomach pain after contacted with suddenly dead chicken.

The vice service chief of RSUD Banyumas, Dian Isworo (21/1) said that patient showed bird flu signs when she was admitted to hospital Monday (19/1). Blood sample of the patient has been collected and will be checked by Jakarta laboratory for confirmation. Dian Isoworo also stated that patient had close contact with chicken since she was working as chicken meat seller at traditional market. Patient had contact with dead chicken last week when she found that one of the chickens that she was selling was dead. According to the Livestock Service officer, the dead chicken contacted with patient contracted bird flu virus.

6-year-old child bird flu suspected patient from Kendal, Central Java

A 6-year-old child, bird flu suspected patient in Kendal, Central Java is treated at intensive care unit regional hospital RSUD Dokter Soewondo Kendal. The child, DN, is resident of Ngesrep, Jurang Agung village, Plantungan subdistrict, Kendal.

Monday 12/1, patient was admitted to regional hospital by public health center of Plantungan. According to the medical record, DN developed bird-flu like symptom such as beathing difficulty, coughing and high fever. Doctor at the hospital said that according to the simple laboratory test there were no bird flu sign observed, however the tracheal swab and blood sample have been sent to Medical School of Dipenogoro University Semarang for further examination.

DN is suspected to contract bird flu virus since number of chickens in his neighborhood suddenly died due to bird flu infection.

Central Java::: Chicken outbreak (Updated- was reported as East Java)

Bird flu outbreak reoccurs at Desa Singodutan, Selogiri Subdistrict, Wonogiri Central Java. About 40 chickens suddenly died since Friday last week. Dead chickens were tested positive avian influenza or bird flu virus by Livestock, Fisheries and Marine Service of Wonogiri. Up to now there’s no human symptoms observed.

Within last week, other bird flu outbreak in chicken also occurred in Gunung Mas, Pagutan, Manyaran.
