Bird flu re-emerges among chickens in Lampung

Avian influenza infection in poultries re-emerged in Kecamatan Jatiagung, Kabupaten Lampung Selatan. (Lampung is a province in Sumatera island)

Chickens were suddenly died in that area, as reported by the local people. Avian influenza outbreak was previously occurred in Desa Margagung, Kecamatan Jatiagung at beginning of 2008. Last October, Kecamatan Jatimulyo, area next to Kecamatan Jatiagung reported to have avian influenza outbreak in chickens. Up to now, in 2008 all 17 subdistrict of South Lampung have been recorded to have bird flu outbreak

The poultry traffic in not strictly monitored, so some sick chickens are supplied to traditional market. There is no rule to build bird abattoir, so in some cases bird abattoir can be found at human neighborhood.

Riau::: Nine-year old child recovered from bird flu

A child, NW (9) from Kecamatan Bandar Sekijing, Kabupaten Pelalawan, Riau, is suggested infected by bird flu. This child was admitted to RSUD Arifin Achmad hospital on Friday 14/11. Up to Friday 21/11, the patient has been recovering, but still under treatment until at least 2 more weeks.

Misnia, the patient’s parent to Riau Pos described, “Our kid had high fever and we took her to the hospital in case of something worse happened. Now we’re glad because she’s getting better, and also we’re thankful because the medical cost is supported by the government.” Suprianto, patient’s parent also explained that they reared 5 birds in backyard. Without order, Suprianto burned the birds to prevent any possible disease spreading.

Dr Azisman, the doctor in charge to the patient said that NW had been confirmed bird flu positive infected. Meanwhile, Riau Province Health Service, through the head of Health and Nutrition Subdivison, Burhanudin Agung, they still couldn’t confirm the diagnosis because they havent’s received the blood sample analysis result from central laboratory.

Patient’s samples have been sent three times, and now the doctor team of Arifin Achmad are still waiting for the result.

Semarang::: government dismisses birdflu alert

Yesterday, Friday 21 November 2008, bird flu alert status of Semarang following the former case bird flu infection in human which had killed a teenager, has been dimissed by ministry of health Semarang region. This is regarding to the incubation period of bird flu which last up to 14 days after infection. So far, there are no clinical signs reported near the victim’s area.

19 patients negative birdflu

(All patients bird flu suspects Makassar have been tested negative birdflu. This is reported in TV news 21 November 2008, by Bahasa Indonesia. I tried to summarize into english as follows == AvianInfluenzaIndonesia, adm):

MAKASSAR (SINDO) – Total 19 patients of bird flu suspect treated at Wahidin Sudirohusodo hospital (RSWS), confirmed negative birdflu. 

This resulted from blood and swab samples examination which sent to Research and Development Laboratory of Ministry of Health (Litbangkes) Indonesia. “This evening (Thursday, 20/11), we received the result and showed all patients negative bird flu”, said correspondent of Bird Flu tem of RSWS, dr Khalik.

With this laboratory result, RSWS had allowed 5 patients who had been treated for more than a week to return back home.

Those 5 patients are Annisa,Firdaus,Hasnawati,Fauzi, 3, and Rahmawati,2, the residents of Dusun Tangkejangang Jalan Pattene RW 2 RT 5,Kelurahan Sudiang, Kecamatan Biringkanaya.

”They (the 5 patients) have been recovered so that we allowed them to return home”, said dr Khalik. He added also that other 12 patients who were still under isolation also recovering.  

These patient are Nurul Awaliah, 3,6 months (?? – adm), Nurfadilah, 4 months, Salman, 4, Ilham, 2, Alif, 3 months, Desi, 5, Eki Desriani, 5 months, Irwan, 6, Saleha 12, Ny Johani, 60, Nartati, 26, dan Nuraeni,31.

Meanwhile, Marine and Food Security Diavision, again culled 6 poultries yesterday. This time, the poultries found at other location, Kelurahan Sudiang Raya, Kecamatan Biringka-naya. This has added one more spot of bird flu positive, into total three spots. Previously, 167 sick poultries found and culled at Dusun Tangkejangang Jalan Pattene RW 2 RT 5 Kelurahan Sudiang,Kecamatan Biringkanaya.

This week, dead and bird flu positive poultries has been observed in the same neighborhood. “We’re still screening the poultries. Birds will be culled after confirmed positive bird flu”, as Chief of Livestock department, Marine and Food Security Division Makassar, Yulistiawati. They disinfected the infected area, especially poultry cages. 

From RSWS data, during 2006-2007, bird flu suspect case has reached 37 cases, and 1 case was confirmed positive. Up to November this year, RSWS has handled 19 bird flu suspects and resulted negative. (mulyadi abdillah).

Further Makassar cases

According to the Ketua Tim Penanggulangan dan Pencegahan Flu Burung Dinas Kesehatan Sulsel, Sukardi, all first 17 sample tested negative bird flu. But as he couldn’t reconfirm his former statement, until now noone is sure until officially announced by Balitbangkes  (Research and Development Laboratory of Ministry of Health).

Semarang::: Official closed slaughterhouses

Team of Agricultural and Livestock Service, Kecamatan Gayamsari, Semarang, Central Java, shut down four poultry abattoirs or slaughterhouses within the residence of former bird flu fatal victim. This action started 11 November ago, after the laboratory result of patient had been confirmed positive. Now , officials are still monitoring the situation after shutting the abattoirs.

South Sulawesi bird flu suspects, now 19 people.

MAKASSAR (SINDO) 20 November 2008.

Two more bird flu suspects had been admitted to Wahidin SUdirohusodo (RSWS). This has increased total 19 patients which suspected bird flu treated in this hospital. Two new suspects are Ikbal, 6 and Karmila, 4, residents of

Dusun Tangkejangang Jalan Pattene RW 2 RT 5 Kelurahan Sudiang Kecamatan Biringkanaya, still the same neighborhood as previous patients. According to dr Khalik, correspondent of RSWS, one of the infant still developing high fever and still under intensive care. Meanwhile other infant had recovered. Patients are still under intensive care until laboratory test result issued.
 ”Instead of RSWS, Makassar city governement has set Faisal and Akademis hospitals as refferee hospital”, said Burhanuddin, assistant of Makassar city govenrment. Meanwhile, Food and Marine Security of Makassar culled about 60 poultry positive infected by H5N1, yesterday (19 November 2008). “Again, poultries were found dead at RT 1 RW 5, Kelurahan Sudiang, Kecamatan Biringkanaya,” said Chief of Food and Marine Security Division of Makassar. This is following the previous depopulation to 167 poultries at Dusun Tangkejangang Jalan Pattene RW 2 RT 5 Kelurahan Sudiang Kecamatan Biringkanaya. This actions was taken after people reported poultries suddenly died in the area this last 3 days.

South Sulawesi Bird Flu Regional Comission (Komda)

November 20, 2008

Regional Comission of Bird Flu Control and Eradication for South Sulawesi had been established by South Sulawesi provincial government last Tuesday.  Syahrul Yasin Limpo, governor of South Sulawesi and also the chief of the comission said that since bird flu outbreak had been increasing in South Sulawesi, this had risen the possibility of infection to people, especially concerning the former 17 bird flu suspects who were still under treatment. He also said that up to now they were still waiting for the diagnosis result from Jakarta.

Indonesia denies new case of bird flu death

The Indonesian Health Ministry on Thursday [13 Nov 2008] denied
foreign reports that a 15-year-old girl from Central Java had died of
avian influenza, saying 2 laboratory tests had showed her blood
samples negative for H5N1 [avian influenza virus].”

This statement is contradictive to correspondent of MetroTV news (Indonesia local TV station, adm) Semarang Wednesday 12 November 2008.

It says, medic team of Karyadi Hospital Semarang had confirmed Dewi Sartika, 15,  from Central Java, positive bird flu. This was stated by Doctor Agus Suryanto, one member of doctor team. The test was done by Ministry of Health laboratory and had showed positive avian influenza virus. (Local TV news: http://www.metrotvnews.com/)

Meanwhile birds depopulation team had culled all chicken and birds also burned the cages at Kampung  RW 1 dan RW II Kelurahan Siwalan, Kecamatan Gayamsari, neighborhood of Dewi Sartika. Chicken slaughterhouse within this area had also been closed.
